The Farmhouse Project

Perched on elevated contours, this residence is a testament to thoughtful design and sustainable living. Strategically positioned to offer sweeping views of the frontal estates and the verdant landscape of areca nut plantations, the farmhouse seamlessly blends traditional charm with modern comfort. From its meticulous use of locally sourced materials like laterite stone and Mangalore tiles to its strategic orientation for optimal natural lighting, every aspect of this project reflects a commitment to authenticity and sustainability. Join us on a journey where architecture meets nature in perfect harmony.

The structural system of this two-story residential building, underscores sustainable principles and embodies the essence of regional architecture. Notably, the approach taken in the construction of this edifice reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility and a deep respect for the local climate and traditions.

Load-Bearing Structures: The foundation of this structure exemplifies an eco-conscious ethos through the use of load-bearing systems. By relying on the innate strength of materials, this building significantly reduces its reliance on steel and concrete.

Masonry Walls with Laterite Stone: The locally sourced laterite stone used in constructing the masonry walls imparts the necessary structural integrity to the building. They not only lend the building its fortitude but also play a crucial role in maintaining a comfortable indoor climate. The laterite’s ability to absorb and release heat gradually means that the structure remains thermally efficient, reducing the need for energy-intensive cooling systems. This is a particularly relevant feature in Dakshina Kannada’s tropical monsoon climate.

Roofing System: A sustainable approach extends to the roofing system, which is a careful amalgamation of concrete and the iconic Mangalore tiles, carefully supported by a metal frame. The concrete roof lends durability and provides protection against the region’s heavy rainfalls and intense sunlight. It also offers a platform for future eco-friendly endeavours, such as solar panel installation.

The Mangalore tiles are a testament to local ingenuity and tradition. Their unique design, crafted from natural materials, not only adds to the building’s aesthetic charm but also contributes significantly to temperature regulation. They serve as excellent insulators against heat and noise, ensuring a serene indoor atmosphere. The metal framework beneath the tiles not only reinforces the structure but also ensures that the roofing system remains stable over time. Lightweight and durable, the metal frame, if responsibly sourced, aligns with sustainable construction practices.
